In 1997, GM produced one of the greatest automotive engineering accomplishments in its long and overall successful history. The LS series of engines is the epitome of efficient powerful v8 design, the most refined pushrod v8 in a production car. It has won several awards, and came in a wide array of vehicles all around the US. The LS series of engines fits beautifully into the s30 chassis with minimal fabrication. It can be found with the t56 or even the TR-6060 transmission (both are strong 6-speed transmissions), and it’s avilable inexpensively on the used market. It’s the perfect candidate to put into the engine bay of my 240z, and my budget has enough wiggle room that I could buy one and install it without breaking the bank.
But I won’t buy one. I’m just fine, thanks. The Datsun/Nissan L-series engines move the car around without any complaints, and while an LS engine would theoretically be an upgrade in every direction, it’s not worth the time and investment just for some extra bragging rights. This thing is my daily driver, after all.
As much as I love one-upmanship and everything that can be excessive about cars, sometimes you need to figure out where to draw the line. I may end up revisiting my engine options if/when the l28et I have dies but I won’t open that can of worms unless I absolutely have to.
